10 tips for developing good governance
Board members and their staff are, often look for ‘off the shelf’ answers to their questions, concerns, problems and issues. Whilst it is not possible to wave a magic wand or provide a ‘one size fits all solution’ we have produced a list of ‘tips’ to help guide organisations to find their own solutions or answers
Can you add to or improve the list?
The Foundation is keen to ensure that ideas and experience are widely shared.
So the list is for you to use and tailor to your own situation - using the ‘share alike’ copyright license, as described below.
We’d also like to gather comments, additions and suggestions to add to the list so that we build a comprehensive and relevant set of guidance tips, which remain topical. We have already received lots of comments and additional tips - keep them coming!
You can download a copy of the document here (pdf - 36KB) and email us your thoughts.
Governance Game
Governance is one of those aspects of organisational life difficult to describe but easy to recognise when it goes wrong...Board members leaving in frustration, executive director and chair in power struggles, client groups feeling they don't get a say, stormy annual meetings... and that's just in the nonprofits. Drew Mackie and David Wilcox have developed a simulation exercise that helps to unravel some of the tensions and identify improvements.
You can download here (44KB, pdf) a more detailed sheet of instructions developed by Drew and David. And if you would like to find out more about their work go to http://partnerships.typepad.com/civic/images/instr.jpg
